This is termite swarm season. Winged termites can suddenly appear inside your home. You will often find them on window sills and near other light sources. The winged reproductives are dark brown to almost black, and the wings are brownish gray with a few hairs and two dark veins on the leading edge. They have a very small pore (i.e., fontanelle) on their heads. The soldiers are white with rectangular yellow-brown heads that are two times longer than their width, and large mandibles that lack teeth.
Termite colonies are usually located in the soil from which the workers build mud tubes to structural wood where they then feed. Typically, colonies are connected to the soil and/or close to a moisture source. Occasionally, colonies can become isolated in structures above ground, providing there is a source of moisture and food. These colonies can produce supplemental queens that are fully capable of producing large numbers of eggs. Swarms usually occur on a spring morning after a warm rain.
